Founded by Sarah Dubbeldam in 2012, Darling began as a magazine with a dream to change the media industry for good. The publication, which refused to retouch women, filled a need for deeper conversations around mind and soul. Now a clothing line, Darling Society is a tangible expression of its mission—encouraging women in their connection between self-esteem and getting dressed. Part of that includes a capsule collection full of beautiful, wearable pieces that can be easily interchanged. We talked with the Darling Society team to get all the hows and whys on curating your own wardrobe capsule.
Let’s start with the basics. What is a capsule wardrobe, and what is the benefit of curating one for yourself?
A capsule wardrobe is a great way to remove some of the stress that can come with getting dressed in the morning. The goal is to fill your closet with pieces that are easy and neutral enough to mix and match, while still unique enough to be an outward representation of yourself. When you open your closet, you should only see things you love and feel confident styling together. This doesn't mean you can't and won't have outliers for special events; it just makes your day-to-day easier and more streamlined when getting ready!
What are the elements of a capsule wardrobe?
Capsule wardrobes can be different for everyone, depending on each person's lifestyle. When putting one together, it's good to categorize your life and activities that you get dressed for the most—for example, work, running errands, taking kids to school, or date nights. From there, you can also categorize by type (tops, bottoms, sweaters, dresses, outerwear, etc.) and find pieces that can easily be worn to multiple activities and work well when styled with different pieces to either elevate or dress down an outfit.
How can someone highlight their personal style and personality when dressing with a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to mean sacrificing personal style—it’s all about curating versatile pieces that still make you feel uniquely you. It's important to mix textures, silhouettes, and colors. Also, adding personality through jewelry, shoes, and bags can instantly take an outfit from day to night, or from everyday to special occasion. Having unique pieces that still style well with your essentials helps your capsule wardrobe function without lacking self-expression. The way you style each of your pieces also adds personal flair. An intentional capsule wardrobe isn’t about being minimalist and blending in; it’s about making getting dressed in the morning more effortless, while still having your clothes represent you.
